Alcohol Misuse

How it can happen

Problem drinking has been described as having a physical compulsion to drink alcohol combined with a mental obsession for it. It can exceed all intelligence and levels of common sense and cannot be controlled by willpower alone.

It can exceed all intelligence and levels of common sense and cannot be controlled by willpower alone.

If you have tried changing your drinking pattern, the times you drink, the places you drink, the reasons you drink, the type of drink and these things haven’t brought about the changes you would like, maybe you need some help.

Problem drinking is not necessarily about losing material things but how we feel around it. A good question to ask yourself is “Is my drinking costing me more than money?”

Help for Family Members

It is often the case that those who are closest to an individual with an addiction problem become depressed or feel powerless to help. They may feel angry or frustrated. Supportive help for those family members or carers can be vital for all involved if progress is to be maintained. I can also help those families where an individual is not willing to acknowledge their problem or seek assistance for it. Guidance can be provided to enable families to help motivate the individual to accept support, or where this isn’t forthcoming, support them through this.
